Music has been a constant companion since I was very young. I was that student in the back of the classroom, tapping my feet or pencils to create rhythms while still paying attention. Maybe a bit of ADHD played a role—I couldn’t sit still at the table, always playing with cutlery or discovering new sounds from every surface during family meals. This restless curiosity shaped my early relationship with sound.

Early Struggles and Discoveries

I started piano lessons very early, but traditional teaching methods didn’t click with me. The rigid structure felt boring and didn’t match how I learned best. Later, I picked up the guitar and spent countless hours in front of the sound system, rewinding tapes repeatedly to catch the right chords. This process helped me grow as a musician in a way that felt natural and exciting.

As a teenager, I played in several bands. At home, I experimented with acoustic guitars, buckets, and pots, much to the dismay of my neighbors and parents. These noisy sessions were chaotic but essential—they taught me about rhythm, timing, and the joy of making music with others.

Finding My Strength in Teaching and Rhythm

Giving guitar lessons was a turning point. I realized my true gift wasn’t just playing an instrument but understanding and feeling music deeply. This insight changed how I approached music and my role in it.

After facing a burnout and a few years of struggle, I finally took a step back to embrace music fully again. Running a bar with my wife, Gemmi Taverne, gave me a unique opportunity. Hosting bands allowed me to join in with percussion during solo or duo acts. To my surprise, artists welcomed my contributions warmly, and I found a new way to connect through music.

Embracing Percussion and Rhythm Guitar

Percussion and drums have become my "mother tongue." I also add backing vocals when I can. Guitar solos don’t come naturally anymore after years without practice, but rhythm guitar and guitar voicings are a different story. If a band needs a second guitar to lift their songs, I’m ready to step in.

This journey has brought me happiness and opened doors to discovering new artists and musical styles. Being a session musician means I get to support others’ creativity while expressing my own love for rhythm and sound.

Why Session Musician Life Fits Me

  • Flexibility: I can join different projects and explore various genres.

  • Collaboration: Working with other musicians keeps me inspired and growing.

  • Passion: Music remains a source of joy and healing.

  • Support: I bring enthusiasm and a deep understanding of rhythm to every gig.
